COMPARISON
Voidex vs WinRAR vs 7-Zip
Three ways to compress files on Windows. Here is how Voidex 3.0.0, WinRAR 7.11 and 7-Zip compare on price, formats, compression ratio, speed, verification and privacy.
Voidex is the free, local-first option that picks a codec per file and verifies every archive it creates; it produced 5.5% less total output than WinRAR 7.11 across 100 lossless tests. WinRAR is much faster and writes native .rar files, but it is shareware. 7-Zip is a free, long-established open-source archiver with broad format support and a classic interface.

The benchmark, in numbers
Voidex compares itself against WinRAR 7.11 in Smallest mode over 100 lossless tests covering text, photos, 3D models, audio, video, documents, binaries, archives and mixed folders. Both tools received separate copies of every input, execution order alternated, and every archive passed an integrity test.
Nothing is hidden or cherry-picked, and the benchmark is reproducible. Read the methodology, the raw CSV/JSON results and the benchmark tool in the public repository: github.com/axel0n/Voidex → benchmarks. Results describe that corpus and test machine, not every possible workload.
Which one should you pick?
- You want a free app with no trial or ads
- You want the smallest archive and don't mind waiting longer
- You want every archive verified before it is called done
- You want compression that stays entirely on your PC
- You prefer dragging a file to the screen edge over opening an app
- Speed is the priority — it finishes in a fraction of the time
- You need to create native .rar archives
- You already own a licence and are used to its interface
- You want a long-established free open-source tool
- You work across Windows, Linux and macOS
- You rely on its other formats (.7z, TAR, XZ and more)
Comparison questions
Is Voidex a free WinRAR alternative?
Yes. Voidex is free with no trial and no ads, while WinRAR is shareware. Voidex opens ZIP, 7z and RAR archives, creates ZIP and its own verified .vdx format, and in a reproducible 100-test benchmark produced the smaller archive in 89 cases.
Is Voidex better than WinRAR?
It depends on what matters. Voidex is free, verifies every archive it writes with a SHA-256 Merkle tree, and produced 5.5% less total output than WinRAR 7.11 across 100 lossless tests. WinRAR is much faster (17.49 s vs 221.88 s in Smallest mode), writes native .rar files and is the better pick when speed or the RAR format is required.
Can Voidex open RAR and 7z files?
Yes. Voidex opens and extracts .rar, .7z, .zip and .vdx archives for free, with preview where supported. Creating RAR archives is not supported, because the RAR format is proprietary to WinRAR.
Is Voidex faster than WinRAR?
No. In the published 100-test benchmark, WinRAR 7.11 completed the run in 17.49 seconds and Voidex in 221.88 seconds in Smallest mode. Voidex spends that extra time testing codecs per file, which is why its combined output was 5.5% smaller.
Is Voidex better than 7-Zip?
7-Zip is a long-established free open-source tool with a classic interface and broad format support. Voidex is also free and adds content-aware codec selection (zstd, Brotli, LZ4 or xz per file), verification of every archive before completion, and a modern drag-to-edge workflow in a single portable ~15 MB executable.
